In short
Laser surgery in proctology uses a diode laser, usually with a wavelength of 1470 nm, and a thin fibre that is inserted into the tissue. The heat makes haemorrhoidal tissue shrink or closes a fistula or cyst tract from the inside. At A-Surgery we use the Leonardo laser. The method is not suitable for everyone, and the surgeon assesses at the visit whether laser is the right treatment for you.
Seek emergency care for high fever, rapidly increasing pain or swelling around the anus or tailbone, or heavy bleeding.
What happens at the examination
Before laser treatment the surgeon performs a proctological examination with proctoscopy and, when needed, rectoscopy. For a fistula, the course of the tract and its relation to the sphincter muscle are mapped, sometimes with additional imaging. For a pilonidal cyst, the number of openings, tracts and any active infection are assessed.

Treatment options
The most suitable treatment is decided after an individual medical assessment.
After treatment
Laser procedures are performed as day surgery and you go home the same day. Most people return to light work within a few days. Some tenderness, swelling and slight discharge are common during the first days. You receive written advice on pain relief, hygiene and bowel habits, and follow-up is included.
Frequently asked questions
Which laser do you use?
We use Leonardo, a diode laser for proctology among other uses, with a wavelength of 1470 nm. It is designed to treat tissue from the inside through a thin fibre.
Is laser treatment less painful than conventional surgery?
Studies usually show less pain and a faster return to normal activities after laser compared with traditional surgery, because there are no large wounds. Individual experience varies.
Is laser suitable for everyone?
No. Very large haemorrhoids with a large external component, some complex fistulas and pilonidal cysts with an active abscess may need another or combined treatment. The surgeon decides at the visit.
Can the problem come back?
Yes, recurrence occurs after all methods. After laser, a new procedure can often be performed in the same gentle way if needed.
How much does laser treatment cost?
You receive a cost estimate after the consultation. A consultation for anal symptoms costs SEK 1,200, or SEK 1,900 with rectoscopy.
Do I need a referral?
No. You book an assessment directly with a specialist surgeon yourself.
